Civic Campus Community Input Forum

What are your thoughts on a Seaside Civic Campus?

Studio Gang architects (www.studiogang.com) have agreed to assist the City of Seaside to study whether a courthouse can be built for less than a $1,000 a square foot (built by the State, in a decision year(s) from now) at the top of Broadway Avenue and General Jim Moore Blvd on former Fort Ord land that is referred to as “Seaside East” and whether it can be done in an environmentally sensitive manner. As part of the study, they’ll think through whether a City Hall and a third civic building (a performing arts / expo center getting quite a few mentions) would be a cost-efficient and community-building way to proceed.

We have already decided that any building at the top of Broadway needs to fully respect the importance of the location and respond to it in a thoughtful manner.

What We Heard

Posted on May 1, 2019 at 11:54 AM by Lesley Milton

In meetings, interviews, and follow-up conversations, residents and key stakeholders have shared important ideas and insights about the City of Seaside and the potential impact of a new Civic Campus that places together a new City Hall, County Justice Center, and community facilities on the eastern edge of Fort Ord.

The listening sessions touched on a wide range of subjects, from affordable housing and mobility to economic impact and civic identity.  Several themes emerged from those discussions that highlight important considerations for the study, including, but not limited to:
  • Need for careful attention to environmental impact
  • Interest in enhancing awareness, appreciation, and interaction with local natural resources and wildlife habitat in a sustainable way
  • Interest in telling Seaside’s story from an inclusive range of perspectives
  • Desire to celebrate Seaside’s rich, multicultural identity
  • Importance of Fort Ord as a recreational resource
  • Support for increased transparency and easier access to government services
  • Importance of adequate mobility and transit to enhance access to a civic campus
  • Preservation of ocean views and ensuring public access to those views
In addition to providing a deeper understanding of the history, values, and hopes of the people of Seaside, the listening sessions revealed that there is broad interest in having a central gathering place for community events and activities.  Further, that such a place should support the educational, recreational, and cultural life of the City by being multipurposed, flexible, accessible, and include indoor and outdoor public space.

We’d still like to hear from you!  Feel free to offer your ideas and insights in the comments section at the bottom of the page.

Listening and Learning

Posted on May 1, 2019 at 11:53 AM by Lesley Milton

Last month, residents and key stakeholders participated in feedback sessions with the City of Seaside and consultant Studio Gang as part of a series of interviews and a Seaside Chat hosted at Seaside Creates.  In addition to listening and learning from individual residents, representatives from environmental groups, local schools, the business community, and more participated in the conversation.

If you were unable to attend, we’ve provided a link to the materials presented at the Seaside Chat.  And we’d like to hear from you!  Feel free to offer your ideas and insights in the comments section at the bottom of the page.
